So much so, that the demand for FSC Certification in the flooring industry has seen a significant rise in the last decade. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international organisation established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. So, in order to carry this FSC label, timber products must be verified as coming from a certified source.

Trojan Timbers is proud to offer 100% legally sourced products. Trojan can offer FSC certified, which we see as an asset to our company. Along with this, we can also produce E0 emission floor which, to put this in perspective, this is the rating you would need when packaging food.

We recognise our responsibility for assisting in protecting the environment by sourcing and working only with factories that have an accredited Environment Management System. These are companies who aim to prevent pollution, reduce consumption of resources and manage waste appropriately. To add to this, the chain of custody (CoC) certification reassures responsible management at all points in the supply chain; pretty much tracked from the forest right to our warehouse in Australia!

It’s safe to say that Trojan is an active stakeholder in ensuring we protect our environment whilst providing the best quality flooring to the Australian market. In doing this, we are supported by leading industry accreditations to give our customers the peace of mind that their flooring is indeed environmentally friendly whilst it continues to perform for years to come.

French Door Benefits

Whether you’re renovating or building from scratch, it can be difficult to design your home space especially when you’re unsure of the final look or future maintenance. Aside from their numerous advantages, we have managed to pull together the top three reasons why French doors are a great investment for your property.

Customisation

When it comes to French doors, their diversity allows for both internal and external installations. You can almost think of them as a great base to build around. Their easy customisation benefit allows owners to create features involving side windows or panelling that can look really impressive. In addition to this, simple design tweaks such as door staining, glass styling, handle selections and security options can also add that extra finish.

Spaciousness

Homeowners would agree that creating and making the most of their space is a top priority when producing their desired look. French doors assist with this aim by developing the feeling of openness in areas whether they’re used internally or leading outside. You can think of it almost as an illusion, these doors don’t necessarily create more space but instead make it feel like there is additional room.

Additional Light

Depending on the design of spaces, natural light can be really difficult to attain throughout properties. On the other hand, French doors are a great way to generate the flow of natural light throughout areas of your home. With the double light enhancement from these doors, the time and cost of installing new windows or even skylights can be avoided. Not only does natural light add that extra charm to spaces but it creates comfort, can change the tone of a property and increases energy efficiency!

French doors have always been a favourite here at Trojan ultimately because of their simple adaptability and endless customisation options. Overall, it looks like this year will bring an entirely new mood to interiors with Earthy and natural themes being emphasised by specific colour palettes, textures and materials. Bringing nature into our homes to create cosiness and warmth is the underlying influence for this year, and if that is anything to go by then Trojan definitely has you covered!

The Hamptons look in Australia is anticipated to stay around due to its growing popularity in our coastal lifestyles. With this primary style going hand in hand with classical and sophisticated interiors, it’s no surprise that the desire for incorporating wider and longer timber flooring planks is still in high demand. This aesthetic is best known for having fewer joint lines and thus highlighting the wood’s natural knots and grain characteristics. With this trend being a hot favourite here at Trojan, we cater for this look in both of our timber and vinylflooring collections. Offering these larger plank sizes to the market allows owners to create that sleek yet refined appearance in countless residential and commercial spaces.

As textures are also predicted to play a huge role in this year’s themes, hand-crafted finishes are forecasted to make the biggest impact this year. The beauty of this feature is the numerous décor types that can be achieved – vintage, rustic, industrial and the list goes on. Flooring is certainly no exception to this slight finishing that makes a huge difference to areas. Trojan’s European Oak flooring range will definitely be one to look out for with this fashion, especially due to its hand-finished stains and stress to the hardwood. This product not only creates a sense of prestige and elegance in properties, but it ultimately establishes an overall feel of confidence.

While soft colour palettes are expected to be left behind, a huge shift towards darker and richer tones will be on the rise. Colours schemes including reds, hazelnut, oranges and chestnut will be paired with forest greens which underpin these natural and Earth themes. Therefore, it’s time to welcome back the warm and classic deeper colours, particularly when it comes to flooring options. These trendy rich colour arrangements are set to lead the way in 2017, as property owners are looking to make bold statements in their spaces. Trojan provides for these shades and tones in all of our ranges; whether it is timber, vinylor bamboo flooring.

There is no doubt that there will always be room for timber flooring on the market, its beauty and timelessness is something that will never go out of style. From the feel and comfort to the aroma of natural wood in your home, it’s truly one-of-a-kind. No matter what the current trends are telling us, timber flooring will fit in with wherever whenever.

If you require any more information please do not hesitate to contact our office on (07) 3861 4422. Flooring underlay is a thin cushion-like layer that is placed underneath the flooring and is essential if you’re seeking a quality finish. So the big question is; which type of underlay suits

Selecting the right underlay is crucial when installing your flooring and is a process that many don’t give much thought to or find very confusing. Flooring underlay is a thin cushion-like layer that is placed underneath the flooring and is essential if you’re seeking a quality finish. This is installed for many purposes such as to provide comfort underfoot, thermal insulation or to reduce the amount of noise transmitted through the floor. So the big question is; which type of underlay suits your project the most?

The simple answer is that it depends entirely on the type of project that you are working on. We have recently introduced a new underlay, Trojan IQ, which is of the highest quality when it comes to installing our engineered timber flooring system. As unit and urban living are quickly becoming the norm today, the issue of sound transfer has become more critical. As a result of this, we have sourced the most effective product available for our engineered flooring system. Produced from natural rubber and fibre mix, Trojan IQ exceeds all requirements in a typical slab.

Trojan IQ has numerous advantages as it not only offers excellent acoustical reduction but it’s also a moisture inhibitor. As this product can be used in both residential and commercial environments, this underlay reduces foot traffic noise that could impact lower levels of developments. Trojan IQ is recommended for use over all substrates including concrete, particle board and plywood as well as traditional wooden sub-floors.

Here at Trojan we offer two other types of underlay being Domestic Standard and Silent Walk. Domestic Standard underlay allows slight imperfections of a slab to be rectified and is the most economical out of the three options. It is most appropriate for projects such as low set houses where acoustic sound is not a concern.

However we would always recommend using acoustic underlay simply because of its properties. Silent Walk and Trojan IQ reduces both rebound and telegraph sound produced in standard two story houses and high rise developments. So realistically what is the difference between Silent Walk and Trojan IQ? The easiest way to explain this is that while both exceed industry standards, Trojan IQ offers a superior level of performance.

If you require any more information please do not hesitate to contact our office on (07) 3861 4422. This revival has offered a cost effective alternative to owning that timber flooring aesthetic by making spaces look simply remarkable. This is due to its distinct high quality characteristics that allow it to compete highly with other flooring preferences out there.

Here at Trojan we provide a wide range of both engineered timber and luxury vinyl flooring to cater to limitless customers and projects. In doing this, we are often questioned about the differences and similarities surrounding these two prevalent products. Overall, these two flooring ranges at Trojan are commercially graded, meaning that they can be installed into both residential and commercial spaces due to their significant stability. In addition to this, they possess many comparable features such as their simple maintenance requirements, great durability and wide selection of styles available.

Trojan PROFLOOR Advantages:

Creates a natural and warm feeling to spacesAdds resale value to propertiesIncredibly durable and resilientTimelessly beautiful appearance

Trojan Professional Luxury Vinyl Advantages:

Modern and economical flooring optionEIR embossing for true “wood look”Larger plank size on the marketMade of 100% virgin vinyl

Installation:

The installation processes of these two flooring alternatives are therefore different. Trojan’s engineered timber flooring requires the product to be installed as a floating floor or being directly stuck to the subfloor. Refer to timber flooring installation for more information. On the other hand, luxury vinyl flooring can be installed either by the loose lay process or the direct stick method, depending entirely on the area space. Check out our vinyl installation page for more information.

Warranty:

Here at Trojan we are so confident that our products are able to perform year in year out, even in the toughest environments. Therefore we provide a thirty year structural guarantee for our PROFLOOR products. Trojan Professional Luxury Vinyl comes with a ten year commercial warranty and fifteen year domestic warranty.

Comparing two of the most predominant flooring products on the market substantially depends on the customer’s intentions and the project itself. Regardless of the choice you make between these two products though, the end result will be a floor that will last for many years to come without going out of style.

If you require any more information please do not hesitate to contact our office on (07) 3861 4422. Colours dictate the feel of a finished room, home, or project. Depending on what you opt for, a space can be made to feel warm, cold or neutral.

But achieving this ‘feel’ doesn’t just depend on a coat of paint or the fabrics you choose. Your floor also plays a key role.

The psychology of colours

There is certainly no shortage when it comes to research on the psychological affects different colours can have on people. Seeing particular colours can instantly have an effect on us, whether we are consciously aware of it or not.

However the influence colour can have on us isn’t just about emotions; it can also create a specific feeling to a space. If you want your space to feel warm and open, then lighter colours are usually the best option. If you want to have a more classic and comforting feel, then darker colours may help you achieve this.

Timber and emotion

Timber flooring is timeless and with its natural colour variations can evoke the same emotional responses that other colour-based design choices do. No matter what tone you are trying to create within your space, the inclusion of timber for flooring or features collaborate with the chosen colour palette to ultimately convey the intended mood.

Not only does timber have a natural beauty about its appearance but it also holds its own character which can therefore complement any décor. Architects and designers are utilising timber to create memorable focal points by integrating this material into feature walls and ceilings. In doing this, the establishment of a fresh colour palette develops an environment that feels natural, warm and inviting.

Depending on the timber species and colour used, timber features can give a property a true sense of character, whether it is a bright modern feel or a more classic finish. The combined timber characteristics of durability and appearance therefore make it the perfect material for these additional purposes within properties.

Timber flooring in particular has advanced significantly over recent years by assisting in eliminating the issues of scratching and water damage, which has often been a worry for many. Trojan’s engineered flooring is a prime example of where the prevention of such problems is integrated into the initial design of the flooring.

What is undeniable about timber floors is that they offer far more use than you may initially think. With planning and inventive design ideas, you can turn timber flooring into a true piece of art.

To find out more about our range of timber flooring, check out our gallery. Many people who have lived on timber before will know what to expect, but for first timers it will be a whole new experience. We all have to put living on timber in perspective; it is one of the healthiest surfaces to live on, as well as one of the most beautiful.

Timber, as we all know, over a period of time will scratch, mark and dent. For older timber floors, we class this as character and a beautiful floor. Remember the floor we live on is put through more punishment than any other part of the house. Don’t look at your floor without furniture, move your furniture in and watch the room come alive.

UV and Oil finishes are the two types of flooring available, which both have their individual features and benefits.

UV Flooring:

The advantage of timber is it can be re-sanded and coated and brought back to new. The sawn timber on the top of the floor is 4mm. Statistics show re-sanding usually happens every 5 – 7 years and, depending on care and maintenance, you will only sand .5mm of timber off the top when re-coating. Keeping this in mind, you have a floor that will last you between 35 – 50 years.

Oil Flooring:

Oil finished flooring ultimately offers the most natural characteristics in hardwood flooring. A feature of an oil finish is its ease of use. The floor is designed not to be sanded, only oiled. Part of its attraction is it offers the “Hamptons look”. Wide planks, aged, refined and a natural surface.

Care for your timber floor, but most of all enjoy your floor. It will be part of your life for years to come. Let your floor serve your lifestyle.

Engineered Timber Flooring

Care and Maintenance

Cleaning Your New UV Timber Floor

Engineered flooring is extremely easy to clean and maintain. If the floor has surface dirt and dust, it is best to use an anti-static mop. When cleaning the floor, be careful not use excessive amounts of water. Use a well wrung mop so it is damp rather than wet and wipe over. Ideally, we recommend using a “Vileda” or similar mopping system (available from Coles or Bunnings). This system will give you the bucket, mop and mop wringer that will allow you to get your mop water-free. All you will need to do is add very hot water with a capful of methylated spirits to help the moisture evaporate.

Cleaning Your New Oil Timber Floor

Oil finish is extremely easy to clean and maintain. If the floor has surface dirt and dust, it is best to use an anti-static mop or vacuum with a soft brush head so as to avoid scratching the floor. When mopping, use Trojan Natural Soap as this is a purpose-made quality soap for the maintenance and protection of oiled timber floors.

Due to its nourishing properties, the soap quickly fills the pores of the wood and helps protect against dirt and penetration of liquids. When mopping the floor, be careful not use excessive amounts of water. Use a well wrung mop so it is damp rather than wet and wipe over. Ideally we recommend using a “cotton mop”. We would recommend infrequent mopping of the floor; perhaps once a month.

Remember:

It must be remembered that engineered floors are wood and wood can be affected by exposure to excess water.Never use corrosive cleaning chemicals on engineered floors.Never use steel wool on the floor.Never use polish; there is no need to.

Protecting your new timber floor:

Sand and grit from shoes may be able to damage your floors surface as can furniture being pushed across the floors. Here are a few tips on protecting your new floor:

Place doormats at each entrance to help reduce dirt build-up on the floor.Place rugs in high traffic areas such as walkways and hallways etc.Place cups under heavy and soft furniture feet on everyday furniture such as dining chairs, coffee tables, etc. This will help protect the floor from damage through scratching. As previously mentioned, our climate has the biggest effect on timber floors. Please be sure not to allow the direct sunlight to continually beat against your timber floor. This, as well as fading all of your furniture, will absorb all of the moisture out of your floor. This can cause your floor to over-dry and crack. Please make sure you have window coverings on all glass doors and windows.

A note on new installations

After installation, you may experience noise such as creaking as you walk across a room. This is a normal characteristic in all new floors. The two main reasons this occurs are air trapped under the floor during installation and the timber is acclimatising to the conditions of the room. This will settle down within six to eight weeks. You will also notice movement underfoot as you walk over the floor. This is also normal for a new floor and will settle as the air escapes and the acoustic underlay compresses.

A Look at Different Flooring Species

At Trojan Timbers, we offer a wide range of fantastic timber flooring options spanning numerous species of timber. This is a chart that rates each timber’s hardness. To achieve the various ratings a ball bearing is placed on the surface of the timber sample and pressure is applied. The amount or level of pressure needed to indent the surface of the timber determines where it sits on the chart and its subsequent hardness. The inference is if you choose the highest rating timber then this will translate to the best wearing floor in your home or office.

But does this test really answer the question with reference to hardwearing floor, in the real world. In our opinion the answer is no.

The Janka test does identify hardness in timber and we do agree that the hardness or density of timber will relate to surface resistance from abrasive damage caused by everyday living. It is not however an assurance to resistance of scratching or denting of the timber surface-THIS WILL HAPPEN. Put into context, concrete is very hard and yet the surface will still get scratched.

When looking at various timbers available, Jotoba is considered one of the hardest timbers with Nyatoh being one of the softest, however it is not correct to assume that because you may choose the harder rated timber that it will avoid every day wear, damage or scratching. If a chair is dragged across the floor it would scratch both Nyatoh or Jotoba

What is the solution?

Accepting that all timbers scratch you may just decide to choose the timber you like the look of with the view that you can sand, recoat and bring it back to new again, many years down the track.

Alternatively, you may consider purchasing a timber specie with an open grain and a rustic appearance this may include knots or gum veins A number of timber floors are also hand finished to feature uneven surfaces or deep grain effects . These floors will scratch, however it is not as obvious as it would be on a closed grain timber floor like Pine for example.

If you require any more information please do not hesitate to contact our office on (07) 3861 4422. With traditional timber flooring the decision to include timber floors must be made at the onset. The original design requires set downs during construction for the plywood or batons to be installed and then for the traditional timber to be installed over it. This is to ensure the timber floor once installed finishes level with door thresholds etc (traditional floor on average once installed takes up 28mm). Engineered timber floor is no thicker than carpet or tiles, so the original build can be basic and less expensive than allowing for the set down. It also provides an option to the customer or designer to include timber floors at a later date without hassle or expense.

Options

As with any type of timber floor, Engineered Flooring comes in a wide variety of options. Within the Single Strip Collection we offer many options which include standards such as Tasmanian Oak, Spotted Gum or Blackbutt to exotic species such as Kempas or Merbau.

Our new Meilleur range of genuine German and French Oaks which are available in a variety of surface options including smoked, limed, stained distressed or hand finished. With wide 190mm boards this range inspires and leads the current trends to more natural floor coverings. Offering various ‘looks or themes’, the Meilleur range can be used in contemporary or classic designs.

Given the extensive processes employed to ensure a durable, peerless quality for each engineer timber floor option, the above ranges all come with a 30-year warranty. Regardless of which type you choose, an Engineered Timber Floor is ideal for almost any environment where high foot traffic and general activity is a known constant.

Acoustic Installations

With the increased development of residential high rise apartments, the issue of acoustics has become a major consideration. We are specialists in acoustic installations. Our PROFLOOR Engineered Timber Flooring, together with our Silent Walk acoustic underlay is a tested reliable solution to any acoustic concerns you may have.

Silent Walk is an acoustic underlay that helps reduce rebound and telegraph sound within your home or office. However, there are clear differences between the two.

In this blog, we explore some of the main differences, from which type is most durable and which is best suited for your application.

Bamboo

Bamboo is one of the most economical and hardwearing flooring options available today, however not all Bamboo floors are the same, nor is Bamboo suitable for every application. The thickness and construction of the product itself can have a bearing on how the Bamboo performs. The size of the rooms also needs to be taken in to consideration.

What is Bamboo and how is it produced into a flooring?

Bamboo is a fast growing grass. The method of production for Bamboo flooring involves weaving the Bamboo fibres into an adhesive base and compressing them, forming a very strong plank material.

Engineered Timber Floor

While there are many options of “Engineered Flooring” available, they are not all the same. For the purpose of this discussion we will focus the comparison on the Lamella system. This is considered the best system and is how Trojan Timbers PROFLOOR is constructed.

Lamella is simply a three-part construction, firstly the 4mm face or decorative floor surface, then a 9.5mm hardwood core, then backed with a balancing layer of veneer.

What is Engineered Flooring and how is it produced into flooring?

The word engineered is not and should not be viewed as a product name or marketing term. Wood is a living building material, a wonderful piece of nature. However, if wood is to be used to make sturdy quality flooring, nature will also have to be harnessed. Nobody wants curved or warped floorboards.

Timber, regardless of the end product, will react to its changing environment; generally timber that is absorbing moisture will follow its own natural structure which can be a random thing. However, a timber floor properly engineered using a Lamella system allows us to predict and control this movement and this avoids warping. An engineered Lamella floor is far more stable than any form of strand woven bamboo.

Why is Bamboo so popular?

Simply it is extremely well priced and its surface is very user friendly and resistant to impact damage

If you are looking for a wide board timber plank then Bamboo is the most economical option at around 30% cheaper than natural timber.Bamboo flooring is coated with an alum oxide coating (the same coating put on paper laminate); this coating, together with the density of the Bamboo flooring, makes Bamboo highly resistant to impact damage.

Bamboo is available in various thicknesses and types. However we have found strand woven Bamboo to be the most stable in our Australian environment. The thickness is also vital in helping the floor stay stable, we have found 14mm Bamboo to be the most reliable.

Is bamboo suitable for all applications?

The short answer is NO

All timber flooring, as well as Bamboo, reacts to changes in humidity, however Bamboo reacts considerably more than Engineered Timber Floors (TROJAN PROFLOOR) . Put simply it grows more so this has to be allowed for during the installation. We would recommend that gyprock is set up or undercut to create additional space for the Bamboo floor to grow and expand as it reacts to changing atmospheric conditions. However there is a limit to this solution, we would recommend you consider an engineered floor (TROJAN PROFLOOR) over Bamboo if the width of the room is over 5 metres. Note – You can go over 5 metres if you use a joining strip on the floor, however this takes away from the overall look.

Appearance

In stating the obvious in terms of colour tones or surface texture for timber flooring, its look depends on the species you choose – natural timber with its natural variations offers a wide range of options. However there is more to it, some engineered floors are produced with a rotary cut veneer and while the colour for the various options is right, the look and texture is not authentic. Trojan engineered PROFLOOR are all produced from sliced timber logs as they would have produced them 100 years ago. The end result is the floor appearance is 100% authentic and totally traditional.

The options for natural Bamboo floors are essentially colour tone with the main three being Natural, Coffee ( darker brown colour ) and Balinese (coffee with a black tone)

Environmental factors

All of Trojan Timbers products are COC (chain of custody). As far as the market goes, no product can claim a green status simply because it is a processed product. It is important for the ethical supplier to ensure COC and for each customer to ask the question, is this COC certified?
